AUCKLAND.
This day.
The case of the Bank of New South Wales v. the Royal Insurance Company —claim for insurance of property of which the complainants are mortgagees— which was to have been tried to-day, did not come on, owing to the parties having forgotten to notify the Judge, who did not come into town.
The prisoner Whittle, who escaped from the gaol, at first made for the Waitakerie ranges, but subsequently doubled back towards town. He was apprehended last night at Otahuhu by Detective Brennan, who ascertained that his sister and mother-in-law resided in that village. After a patient waiting the man turned up and was marched back to Auckland. There will be an inquiry into the escape of the prisoner.
The Industrial Home enquiry was resumed this morning. The evidence of Stickley, the master, is now being taken. It is expected his examination will last several days.
