The Argus office prepared for an illumination, anticipating a Ministerial victory. In Melbourne an immense crowd occupied the streets fronting the Argus and Age offices, and received successive announcements with cheers or groans. Before the polling com* menced, the Ministry had a start of eight returned unopposed, but as the returns came in, the hopes of their party received a rapid succession of blows. Sydney, July 15. The gold stolen froia Southport has been recovered, and a trooper named FergUßson has been arrested for robbeiy. He was aotive in seeking the criminal, and discovered the wvappers in »Chinamen's garden fbuv hundred yards distant from the office.. He arrested four Chinamen at the post office. Cook and While escorted them to * Palmerston. Another trooper suspecting the captor, searched his box and found the gold.
