OHINEMURI.

(FBOM A COBHEBPONDENT.)

PAKOA,I4th July, 1880.

Our present worthy Resident Magistrate, H. Kenrick, Esq., having received some attention recently, a word from Ohinemari may not be out of place. Since he has presided at our local R.M Court, held in the Paeroa Public Hall, his judgments have given the utmost satisfac* tionto all parties. Although personally he mixes with none of them, he has earned the good-will and respect of this community, and when we reflect on his manly action as Chairman of the Licensing Bench on the Thames in shutting up a number of public-houses, we are eheouraged -to hope that' his promises regarding Paeroa public-houses will be kept —namely, that the number will be reduced by two, leaving three licensed houses having more accommodation than at present. The name of Paeroa with its hotels is the talk of the country, and all visitors to the district are surprised to find what a thirsty lot we are. The Lands Court is making slow progress the goldfield block, which is distressing to bur local storekeepers, no money being as yet in circulation, and the natives are living on credit— taiho, the Court finish, me fey is, the order of the day. Judge Monro is, however, doing his best to expedite matters by allowing only half an hour adjournment at noori for dinner, and sitting until dark. He is anxious to finish soon as in all probability ■ the Court may have to be adjourned; he ■ being expected to hold a Court at Kaipara very soon/unless Judge Eogan will be available, : ; , Slow and quiet as we are a small piece of land at the junction brought over £25 per acre a short time since, Mr J. M. Coote being the purchaser, on behalf Mr Alexander Hogg and himself. The price may seem high, but ten years from now and the position will be one of importance. '" '-:'":':':'- .'■ . _ .:> We have had a visit from Mr Aitken, County Engineer, to look at our Puke road, one mile and a half long and swallowing up the rates of the riding—a ' sample oi swamps road—and yet it is reported that another line of road to the Thames is to be made, having to cross the same swamp and repeat the.expenditure.
