The House met at 2.30.
Mr Beeves gave notice that he would move that Resident Magistrates and Wardens be removed at least once every three y«»rs. In replying to questions it was stated that Government did not think it would be of any use to call for tenders for the supply of telegraph forms, as colonial offices could not compete with Home offices. The matter, however, would be considered.
Mr Bryce introduced the Maori Prisoners' Bill, and stated that to meet the circumstances of the case he would ask that it pass through all its stages to-morrow. The following'bills were also introduced and read a first time .—Education Reserves Amendment (Wanganui); Rivers Conservation Board Grant. .. >
The following were read a second time:—Port Molyneux Reserved Leasing Act, 1876, Amendment; Taranaki Iron Smelting Works; Land Act 1874 Amendment: Oamaru Waterworks Act 1875 Amendment; and Public Health Act 1876 Amendment.
The following passed through Committee :—lnvercargill Drill Shed Site ; Sydenham Borough Council Empowering, and Bluff Harbor Foreshore Bills.
On the motion of Sir George Grey, it was agreed that the House in future meet on Mondays. Sir George Qrey moved for the appointment of a committee to inquire into the petition of L. Ehrenfried, of Thames, complaining of the manner in which certain licenses had been refused at the Thames. - ;/.'' ? The Hon. J. Hall objected, and stated that the Public Petitions Committee was quite competent to deal with the question. A filer discussion, the motion was lostAyes, 27; noes, 32. The following motions were carried :— Mr Jones, that all correspondents connected with the appointment of Henry Hough* ton. Dune din, to positibngin Government Life Assurance and Annuities Department be laifl before the House. ; Mr Lundon, that the report of the Waste Lands Committee on the petition of Joseph Hastel be referred back to the Committee for their re-consideration. Mr Turnbull, that there be laid before the House papers connected with the pc/don of Edward James, convicted of forging at Timaru. The House adjourned at 5.30.
