"TRIED AND TRUE."

The following is a short synopsis ot Mr Walter Reynolds play, " Tried and True," which is to be produced this evening. - This drama is spoken of in termß of high encomium wherever it has j been performed. It is the story of a true woman who has been sorely tried by circumstances. Helen Burton is the daughter of a drunkard, who, her mother being deceased, marries a widow having also a daughter about the same age. Stepmothers' cruelty is proverbial, and Helen attempts to drown hereself, but She is rescued by a woman who carries her to a criminal haunt, and detains her against her will. She commits a theft for the express purpose of being sent to prison. In prison she meets with Mrs Bavenscroft, a benevolent and wealthy lady who eventually adopts her. In the house of her patroness she meets Geoffrey Landfern, an artist who falls in love with her, .and a Lord Fitzeustace who entertains towards her dishonorable designs: She is denounced to Landfern by the infamous woman who saved her from drowning. Fitzeustace is repentant, and offers marriage, while Landfern is yet suffering from the shock occasioned by the revelation of the career of Miss Burton. Landferd's father also denounces her- as a wicked adventuress, and the story is worked up to a highly emotional denouement. A good underplot is disclosed in the career of the step-sister. Mr Walter Reynolds, we may state, is a dramatist of great experience, who has. produced many successful works.
