RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS DAY.
(Before H. Kenrick, Esq., R.M.) DKUJKENNESS.
A young seaman was charged with being drunk last evening. The captain of the vessel h» belonged to gave him a very good character, and stated that it was the first time the prisoner had been inebriated to his knowledge. His Worship discharged prisoner and expressed a hope he would not forget himself againINDECENT LANGUAGE. James Gould was charged on the information of Constable Alexander with using foul and indecent language in Davy street on the night of the 23rd ultimo.
Prisoner pleaded guilty to using bad language, but said it was not so bad as that imputed to him. This was construed into a plea of not guilty. Constable Alexander and Messrs Christenson and Morgan spoke to his using obscene language, although, with the exception of the constable the witnesses were rather hazy as to circumstances.
The Court ordered prisoner to pay a fine of £2 and costs or in default to go to gaol for 14 days. His Worship said it was bad enough for men to get drunk, without corrupting the ears of women and children. In every case of the kind that came before him he should inflict a substantial penalty. Court adjourned.
