INVERCARGILL.
This day. Verdict of Manslaughter against
Dr Moffafct
An inquest was commenced at Winton yesterday md terminated to-day touching the death of Mrs Cameron, wife of a laborer at Win ton. The evidence shows that on Monday the deceased was taken in labor, aud that in the evening of that day Dr Moffatt was called in lo attend her. He remained with her untii Tuesday morr'ng about two o'clock, bf which time the women had reached an exceedingly critical stage. The doctor endeavoured to deliver her both by instruments and manual aid, and failed. At last he threw up thef case, saying he must have some rest, and he carried out this resolve, and never went near the house again until after the child had been successfully delivered by Dr Hannan of Invercargill. A post ~mortem on the body of the unfortunate woman revealed the fact that death had primarly resulted from rupture but how and when it occurred medical witnesses could not say. The jury, after healing lengthy evidence, returned a verdict of manslaughter against Dr Moffatt, on the ground that Mrs Cameron's death resulted from his gross crinrnal neglect and unskilfulness.
