THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN FRANCE.

Public eluca/*i^<^j France comprises tavee stages,'ife^'iaiavy or national j the secondary, or*»kl;)?e clfess, and the su perio ■or university* lo push all these forward, if possible at express speed, if the dominant plssion of France. And as if these professional systems were ittf.deqa&le, Deputies, Senators, Town Council* lors ai d amateurs generally, contribute their ser?ices -o the enlightenment of the masses; The University being now independent, aad revivified by new blood, private professors can opan courses of study, propound their views; and broach innovations. The Superior Council of Education ha" just been elected by the rotes of all t'le learned bodies of the country: the members of this body are progressive educationist! in the highest se:ißo of the word, and direct the pedagogy of the cation. Those persons professionally connected with secondary education, have organised a permanent institute, divided into five sections, each devoted to a Bpecial branch, ard all presided over by M. Breal, one of the hignest authovites on modern education in France. This Congrets takes cognizance of all that is new in the systems of teaching throughout th« world, and practically tests their comparative value. It is remarkable that they are the neglected ideas of Cousin and Saint-Marc Girardin, as ventilated—and forgotten, in 1835, that are now being demanded by public opinion.—Oar Paris Letter.
