THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 1880.

JBr the P.M. s.s. Zealandia we have the latest news from Great Britain. The account is by no means favorable, and we learn that the prosperity which has returned to Great Britain has been seriously retarded in its progress by strikes, which are numerous. Lancashire, where it will be remembered strikes and serious riots were prevalent 18 months ago, is again to the fore, and 21,000 operatives, principally engaged in the manufacture of cotton, are out on strike. The masters refuse to open their mills more than three days a week unless the whole of the employees return to their work. The landing of French Communists on New Zealand shores has caused some discussion, and the newspapers are if anything in favour of the action of the governor of New Caledonia. The Pall Mall Gazette advocates political refuges being permitted to land anywhere in British territory. This may be all very well in England where a few thousand foreign exiles or criminals would be lost in the multitude, but in New Zealand grave doubts arise as to the desirability of French deportea being allowed to reside among us. It is feared that Mr Yesey Stewart will find some difficulty in obtaining settlers for his settlement at Katikati, and the demand for passengers and freight to New Zealand is very slight, owing to the unfavorable accounts received at home of New Zealand. The firm of Money Wigram and Sons have withdrawn from the Australian trade, leaving the Orient line in undisputed possession of the same. Sir Julius Vogel still offers free passages to this colony to domestic servants, and has given an order for Whitehead torpedoes for the defence of colonial shores. This action will add a fresh sum to our already heavy liabilities.
