NEW GOLDEN CROWN.
In expectation of the promise \ breaking down of the specimen. leader, I visif ed the mine this afternoon, but found that it had again been postponed till Saturday, partly in consequence of a slip: which yesterday covered the mouth of the adit, and partly because the country met with in the stripping drive is hrrd, necessitating slow ppgress. The drive goes between the stringer and Ihe No. 1 lode—as the manager has designated the spacimen leader.—ant? the footwall of the former, aii the bungingwall of tlie latter are disclosed oa either side of the drive. In the southern drive the two lodes appear to be coining together, and another two or three feet should effect a junction if they continue their present course. When breaking down takes place there will be a j;ood haul of golden stone. About thirty feet past the No. 1 lode the cross-cut intersected the No. 2 reef a fine loking body of stone from three to four feet thick. It contains antimony, copper, and ruby silver in abundance, and colors of gold jhave been seen.* This is the reef worked from the 100 ft level up by the tributers in the early days when it produced crushing siuff worth more than 2ozs per ton. It is almost intact above the battery level and extends the whole length of'the claim—about 409 ft. The courses of the lode and No. 1 form ai acute angle, the apex of which—the junction—^should be about 40 feet to the left of the crosscut, and consequently it is probable this will be proved by the drive on No. 1. Intermediate : No quartz has been broken from here for the past three or four day a, the manager being desirous of stowing all the quarts broken iv future in the company's batiery, and so save a double handling. The last qua_t;z brokea s lowed gold, md Was of a payable nature. 100 feet le7el : The Jast- leavler cat follows the course ol the drive, aa3 the
quartz is taken down, gold being seen every day. I was shown several nice slones that were picked from it yesterday. Battery: The repairs to the battery are making go ad p ogress, and the traoager expects to be 'rushing in one month at the outside. ALBURNIA. The following is the mine manager's weekly report:—" Sons of Freedom tunnel: The reef to which I alluded ;n my 1; st report; t this level has now come across the drive •nd juncliooed with the main reef. It is composed of very hard quartz. We have just reached the footwall, but I cannot say much about it until we get further ahead aod strip some of the reef for_ the next breaking down. Dixon's level: Cleaning out and repairing this d:ive is still proceeding, and I have this day stalled 4 men vo clean out and repair Dixon's drive on Waau level, and to make ivady for sinkiig winze ot Dixon's reef. 160 ft levA, east; Driving lias been carried on by contract;. 32ft have bren driven during last fortnight. Latterly the reef has become smaller and better defined, and I believe it to be good payable dirt. Si oping is also being carried on on this level near Whau boundry, and where we are pro* curing some good picked stone and good crushingdirt. Hanging-wa'l leader; Driving was suspend' I here for some time owing to the leader being broken up, until the leading slope was pushed forward. Since then the leader both in slopes and drive has greatly improved showing colors of gold, with a few specimens occasionally. Sloping on hanging-wall leader,; nd Sons of Freedom reef has been carried on with the usual satisfactory results. Intermediate level: Sloping has been carried on east and west where we obtain some good specimens and picked stoDe with a good show still left in face. We have had three interim retortings during the month and have now on hand 16410zs sdwts retorted gold, so that we may expect a fair return at the final retorting for the month. Battery : At present there are 12 head of stampers employed on „ company's stuff, end 10 heads for Scott and party, company's iributers.
