Weimnghon, Tuesday, The House met at 2.30 today. NO-CONFIDENCE DEBATE.
The debate on the no-eoufidence motica was resr'aaed by Dr Wsl'iSj who urged the restoration of Sir Geo. Grey to power as the proper mai (b cavy out the liberal reform.
Mr Gisbbrne criticised the speech made by Mr Reader Wood, reUiUag the various charges ho hud tuudo duv>ug Ms
long political career. In carrying up the credit of tlio Ministry, he bad ciied down the credit of the colony. His remarks read in London vsould operate seriously oa the financial prospects of the colony. It was argued that because railways and other public works had not returned a certain percentage on the;r cost, they were to be put down. Such a process of reasoning, earned out to its natural results, would simply metm a suspension of all the public schemes which did nor happen to return cent per cent. The saving in expenditure, for which the Treasurer had taken credit, was in reality no saving at all. It did not mean a reduction in the permanent charges for Government. It simply meant a refusal on the part of the Government to spend sums for reproductive works voted by Parliament. The real saviug ]id not exceed £7000 or at most. £8000. The Government was not justified in the arrangement it had made wit a the agent-General re-loans. It was not to the interest of the colony to employ persons in the conversion of the loans who held no official position. The whole fiscal policy of the Government was shadowy and unsubstantial.
Mr Murray defended the Property Tax as being in reality less inquisitorial than the income tax, so much advocated by those on the other side of the House.
Debate interrupted by 5.30 adjournment.
