OAMARU.
This day.
The most numerously attended political meeting that has yet taken place in Oamaru was held last night. The occasion was the address to the electors by Messrs Reid and Jones. Daring Mr Eeid's remarks he was often interrupted, and throughout the audience were very noisy. However, he was able to finish his address amidst some applause. M? Jones then rose to address the audience, but the hooting and cheering was so loud and prolonged that after the utterance of a few words he was compelled to desist, and the lights were put out. Bottan eggs and flour balls were freely thrown amongst the assembly during the evening, but when Mr Jones attempted to address the crowd the proceedings were unseemly and disgraceful. The work was that of
a number of larrikins, and was not that of the respectable part of the meeting. The proceedings throughout were the most disgraceful ever yet witnessed in Oamaru, and might have been anticipated from the fact that both candidates had to address the electors—one at the conclusion of the other's address.
