Sir David Wedderburn called the attention of the Government to the condition of the finance. The various crown colonies maintained under the existing arrangements then entail an unduly severe charge on the Imperial Exchequer, and have given notice of motion declaring the desirability of reducing the amounts of grants made to those" colonies in order to render themselves supporting. The convention held in the first instance rendered Grant's supportors sanguine of success, but the late returns reverse his claims. The Duke of Edinburgh who has been for some time commander of war vessels, is engaged in distributing relief to the faminestricken people in the West of Ireland, who recently paid a short visit to London, has resumed his post.
