WARDEN'S COURT.
THIS DAY. (Before H. Kenriek, Esq., Warden.) THE MINEBs' BIGHTS.
Michael Kiley was charged on the information of H. E. Campbell with working without a miner's right. Mr Brassey appeared for defendant. Mr Campbell, iv opening the caje, disavowed any personal feeling in the matter.
Michael Kiley, sworn, deposed— I reBide on the Thames, and hare been mining for the last twelve months without a right. I have not had the means to procure one. I was working ia t.ibutes, and iucmred liabilities. For the past five months I hare been employed in the 41----burDia, and have earaed £2 5s per week. Mr Campbell offered to let the case drop if I paid the costs, in consideration of my attention to him after the assault last night.
His Worship said that if he dismissed the case he would set up a precedent which wou'd virtually carry the principle that any person could work without a Miners' Eight, lie would inflict the nominal penalty of Is and costs, as the right had been, taken out, and he could say that this would be the last case in whien a nominal peaaHy would be inflicted. In future any private individuals laying an information under the section would be allowed no costs. He referred to the fact tbat Mr Campbell stated he was only acting for his clients the natives, and had no personal feeling ?a the matter. Court f.ijourned.
