Annual Inspection.
THAMES SCOTTISH BATALLION
The punur 1 Govexjment ; ispection parade of Nos". 1 and 2 Comprries Thcnes Scottish BattflNon w-.s held at the Navel Hall last evening, Major Withers bsing the inspecting officer. The master was as follows:—Staff—Major Murray, Adjutant Schofield, Quarter-Master Syoi'ngton, Hon. Surgeon Callea, Hon. Chaplain the Rev. S. J. Nei'i; five Steff Sergeants. Band —Bandmaster Hunter, and twentyseven bandsmen. No. 1 Company— Captain Comer, Lieuts. Johnston, iJrownlow and Heron, six Sergee its, one bugler, tmd'64 rank and fil«. i>o. 2 CompanyCaptain Watson, Lieut. Coney, six Sergeants, and 58 rank and fie, Totel on parade, 179. The BattaHon fell ' i at 7.30 sharp, and stood waiting to receive Major Withers, whose arrival a short time afterwards was honored wlt'i the general salute and a crash of martial music from the band. After one or two preliminary movements, the company took open order, pnd Major Withers, accompanied by the staff, went through the ranks,, minutely inspecting the arms and accoutrements of each volunteer. Close order w?s then taken, end the newly elected lieutenant of No. 1 Company, Mr Heron, was requested to put his company through the manual exercise., This was done, and showed the proficiency of the officer end the precision of the men. Lieut. Coney then exercised the No. 2 Company in a si-nlar manner, and tlrs splendid corps containing, as it does, many of the finest young men on the Thames, acquitted itself ad Durably. The battalion was then ordered to stand easy, and the Government muster roll was crUed over, the ' few absentees being satisfactorily accounted for. Some smrrt bat'dion movements were executed, and the bearing of eveiy mai showed that i V were anxious to uphold the prestige, of the corps. The poise of every weapon was perfect, and the great attention wuich had evidently been paid f j the n?nor details of a soldier's outfit was a matter of considerable comment, the strictest uniformity being observed. The efficiency of the men bore testimony >'o their painst. kng zep' and the energy of their inst* actors and we cannol Lelp congratulating the officers of the battalion on their splendid comma ad. After tho diill Voluiteers, Pilce and White were called to the front, and the che npion belts of Nos. 1 and 2 companies were handed to them respectively. Major Withers :i a highlj flatte>'Tig speech congratulated the bath 'ion on its numbers and proficiency. •He expressed regret that a larger ha 11 cou d not be ob' r ioed, as 'he movements were somewhat cramped, lac gallant Major was evidently pleased Tilth the proficiency of the band who have learned a number of hew pieces lately. After the inspection the batti.'ion nnrched througd the principfl. streets of the tiwn, the side walks berag thronged with crowds of citizens. About 9.30 the men were dismissed md so terminated one of the most successful inspections we ever remember being held in tue distric*— a practical refutation of the idea i.hat volu teei.'ag ia our midst is on the wane.
