OHINEMURI.

(FHOM A OOBEEBPONDENT.)

Paiboa, Monday evening.

Our Volunteers, the No. 3 Scottish, held a meeting oa Saturday evening for the purpose of electing officers, Ac. Major Murray was present in his official capacity. There were only two candidates for the position of lieutenant, Mr F. Lipsey and Mr F. Cock, and the first named gentleman was elected to the office. Mr J. Ritchie, sen., was appointed sergeant and secretary to the company. After the business part of the proceeding! was concluded, the company adjourned- to Messrs Cassrell and Bennetts, where the healths of Major Murray, Lieutenant Lipsey and officers and gentlemen were drunk. I think the visit of Major Murray on this occasion has resulted in the settlement of a long standing grievance in connection with our Volunteers, and as the gentlemen elected to the several positions are highly respected citizens, and men who have the interest of the district at heart, fresh life and energy' will doubtless be imparted to volunteers matters. -;

The Lands Court has been the means of bringing a large number of person* to this township. The cases already adjudicated on are not of much public interest, in fact the only one of importance will be that of the goldfield. . ; Mr E. Quinn, the contractor for the drainage of the Te Aroha Block is making good headway. The land is proving to be much better than many people thought, in fact the whole of the swamps hare got a good clay bottom of from two to four feet in depth which proves the land to be of first class quality. <. '•'■ The road between Paeroa and Te Aroha is in a very bad state at present, but as I see, the County Council are bragging ot having a credit balance at their bankers, 1 I trust we shall soon see them spending some of it on this much neglected.road. The deferred payment settlers are- not losing much time in making a commencement with their land. Several of them who have timber growing on their lands are preparing for building houses* [and others are doing the necessary fencing Ac.

There are still too many men out'of employment in this district, and further works by the County, Council will prove very acceptable. ...
