Of 313,000 bales of wool catalogued at the sales, 15,000 have been withdrawn. There has been a smaller attendance of foreign buyers at the sales. Better qualities of combing are slightly higher.

A strong pressure has been brought to bear upon the Porte by representatives of
I the Great Powers with a view of enforcing the provisions of the Treaty of Berlin, more especially with regard to the" promised reiorms in the internal affairs of the Turkish Empire. The proposal has been formally submitted that Midhat Pasha, governor of Syria, should be re-called to Constantinople and instructed with the tattk of carrying out the views of the European powers. The Sultan has refused his assent to this proposition on the ground that it would involve an unwarrantable interference with bis sovereign rights. However^ the main ground of the objection is the strong personal disfavor in which Midbat Pasha is held in the palace. ■ Latest intelligence from Afghanistan is of a disquieting nature. Ayoub Khan has declared his intention to co-operate with the hostile tribes of the south against the British. He has left Herat with a numerous force for the purpose of marching upon Candahar.
