Thb English Press.—From the Newspaper Press Directory for 1880 we extract the following on the present position of the newspaper press :—' There are now published in the United Kingdom 1835 newspapers, distributed as follows: Fngland (London 364, provinces 1065), 1429; Wales, 65 ; Bcotland, 172; Ireland, 149; Isles, 20. Of these there are 113.daily papers published in England, 4 in Wales, 20 in Scotland, 17 in Ireland, and 2 in the Britieh Isles. Of these 18 were issued daily—namely, 13 in England, 2in Scotland, and 3in Ireland. But in 1880 there are now established and circulated 1835 papers, of which no less than 156 are issued daily, showing that the press of the country has more tban trebled during the last thirty years. The increase in daily papers has been still more remarkable, the. daily issues stand* ing 156 against 18 in 1851. The magazines now in course of publication, including the * quarterly reviews, number 1033, of which 289 are of a decidedly religious character, representing the Church of Englano, Wesleyans, Methodists, Baptists, Independents, .Roman Catholics, and other Christian communities.
