Mining Review of the Week.

The central point of interest during the week has been the completion of the Alburnia's crushing for the month of May, which produced the handsome return of 1500ozs gold—the best obtained from the mine foi* many a day. During the period of Mr Kadford's management the mine has paid £2 or £3 a share in dividends, and two or three more may be confidently expected from the blocks now opened. In connection with the mine it may be mentioned that the gold has at last been seen in the Sons of Freedom tunnel, and there is a fine looking reef. Should the block between the tunnel and the 160 feet level prove „ remunerative there is work for years. In addition to this tunnel the directors are uniting with the Reuben Parr in driving a joint tunneL which will develop still further the deep portions of the mine. The dividendpaid this month amounts to 7s 6d. TheWaiotahi company have also paid a dividend of 2s 6d per share.

Daring the week drainage operation! at the Waio-Karaka hare been going on satisfactorily—the pump reducing the water at the rate of 2\ feet per day. The Big Pump has been stopped for a few days and from measurements made under the direction of the Mining Inspector to-day, it has been found that the water has made a rapid increase. The distance from the sill to the top of the water was 28 feet, or an increase of 16 feet since last Saturday. The Crown Princess shows 268 feet, or a decrease of 2\ feet, and the Piako 259 feet, or a decrease of 18| feet. The gentleman who gave our morning eon* temporary the information regarding the state of the water must hare been chaffing—the idea of the water in the Big Pump shaft remaining stationary or being reduced by the Queen of Beauty pump is preposterous, seeing that were the Queen of Beauty pomp erected over the Big Pump shaft it could not even prevent the water from rising. The Queen of Beauty pump will have a greater strain to bear when it has reduced the water another 30 feet as then the water from the Crown Princess will hare to be raised. Att present the water in the Crown Princess is lower than in the Queen of Beauty, but when they are level a difference will at once be noticeable in the rate of decrease. Another mistake of our contemporary is the statement that no hard bar exints between the two drainage systems. This is a fallacy, as will be proved as soon as the deeper levels are drained.
