CONSIDERABLE attention was attracted this morning to a handsome trophy of soap in ihe window of Mr T. Veole to-day, from the manufactory of Messrs Saunders and Gilberd of Auckland. The trephy is composed of immense blocks of soap, of all qualities and colors, erected in the form of a cone or pyramid. The soap is of first class character, and is a fair sample of the article in its commercial form, as turned out by this firm. A reporter interviewed Mr Gilberd, one of the members of the firm to-day—:both are New Zealand natives—and obtained information regarding the industry. The cole4 nial article is protected by a duty of £4 per ton and tallow and cocoa nut oil are cheaper here than in Britain. Colonial makers can easily keep their manufacture in the market. Messrs Saunders and Gilberd have a plant capable of making about 25 tons per mouth, and are kept fully employed. Tbey intend shortly. to add machinery for the- manufacture of scented soaps which will no doubt largely assist in the increase of the business. The firm do not at present propose exhibiting at the Melbourne exhibition, but a Btrong effort should be made to secure the representations of this thriving industry.
