Wellington, Thursday.

In the Legislative Council on Wednessday, a number of Sessional Committees were appointed, and Captain Baillie was chosen Chairman of Committees. On the motion of Hon. Wilson, a -ommittee was appointed to co-operate with a committee of the Lower House in inquiring into the state of the bankruptcy law, to report within a month. NEW BILLS. The fallowing Bills, being part of the result of the Revision of Statues Commissioners, were received by a message from the Governor:—The Adulterating v Bill, Aliens Bill, Cruelty to Animals Bill, Compensation for Accidents Bill, Animals Protection. in a brief speech, in which ho expressed a hope that all parties would do their utmost to help I lie colony out of its difficulties. Hon. G. R. Johnson seconded the Address. Colonel Whitmore spoke at some length on the Government's policy, chiefly it its favor, especially as to native matters. He highly eulogised Mr Brjce as the best Native Minister the colony had ever had. He criticised the Government's finance, and said he would further their efforts to help the colony out of its difficulties. Finance came on before everything. Their house was on fire, which must he put out before abstract questions could be discussed. He opposed the withdrawal of subsidies, but would raise half the cost of education (in which there was a gross extravagance in teaching boys the alphabet)by direct local taxation. Hon. F. miitaker briefly replied to Colonel Whitmore's remarks. The Address was carried.
