in a brief speech, in which ho expressed a hope that all parties would do their utmost to help I lie colony out of its difficulties. Hon. G. R. Johnson seconded the Address. Colonel Whitmore spoke at some length on the Government's policy, chiefly it its favor, especially as to native matters. Their house was on fire, which must he put out before abstract questions could be discussed. He opposed the withdrawal of subsidies, but would raise half the cost of education (in which there was a gross extravagance in teaching boys the alphabet)by direct local taxation. Hon.
