In consequence of pressure on our space we hold over our usual leading article.
At the meeting of the County Council yesterday the question of increasing the salary of the Chairman to £300 per annum was brought up, and though the matter was not made unfait accompli, from the remarks that fell from several members it is very probable Cr Thorburn's motion will be adopted at the next meeting. Although in the present state of the finances of our local bodies, we are strongly opposed to any increase, of the expenditure, in this case an exception may fairly be made. Mr Brodie devotes all his time to the duties of his office, and the great efficiency that has been attained under his management has earned the County of Thames the name of being the model County of the colony. His success with Ministers, no matter of what party, has become prorerbial, and under the circumstances we think that Mr Brodie deserves and is well worth the increased rate of remuneration the Ceuncil propose bestowing on him. In making the increase it would b well if the Council would adopt the suggestion of a member: to take a portion of the salaries from the special votes. It hardly seems a just prlnoiplejto take the rates and subsidies from all parts of the County to pay a body of men, whose sole work is the expenditure of special votes in favoied districts.
We notice that Mr Abe Hioken, the champion boxor of Australia, has arrived in Grahametown. By an advertisement in another column Mr Hick en notifies his intention of giving an exhibition of boxing in tho Academy of Music. This will no doubt be a treat, and we Bhould advise our readers to witness the exhibition, as Mr Hicken will only give one entortainment. We learn from a private source that the new Waikato literary production, the Te Awamutu Chronicle, to which wo referred a few days ago, is> not a bovafide production, but was got up by certain residents in that j township as a vehicle for a kind of humour j peculiar to themselves. It was printed in ! Auckland, but we understand that the second j number will in all probability never see the 1 lights The " get up " of it was certainly not ! at all bad, but the absence of " Advts," was ! very noticeable. On sit that attempts are about to be made by a large section of the New Whau shareholders to have a new directorate appointed, they not being satisfied with the manner in which the present board manage aflaiis. The correspondent of the Auckland Star thus telegraphs from Wellington yesterday :— " The Star special on entering the gallery of the House of Representatives to reconnoitre before the House assembled, was received by the Auckland members with cheers." This certainly appears to us to be just a trifle " caddish," but we suppose it is all a matter of taste! At a meeting of the vestry of St George's Church held last evening the following letter was read:--" Thames, Ist June, 1880—The Chairman and members of the Vestry of St George's Church. —Rev. Sir, and gentlemen, I hereby cancel as far as I am concerned, the agreement between the congregation of St George's and myself respecting the organ, and request th&t you will take it over as church property, and as presented by me in accordance with my original intention—and in the light I have always regarded it—as a memorial of my mother and sister. The organ was a gift, and my sole motive in attaching any condition, was to incite the congregation to make an effort for what I conceived their own good, the non fulfilment by them of such condition, though it may be a subject of regret is a matter in which I am not personally interested. —I am, Gentlemen, yours, &c, E. T. WILDMAN." Great satisfaction Was expressed by all members present, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Wildman for his gift. We have to acknowledge the receipt of Messrs Frater Bros.' Share Investore' Guide for June. Mb C. McLiveb, tobacconist, has just received ex mail steamer a consignment of the latest novelties in the smoking line. Amongst the articles are French cigarette machines— neat little instruments of wonderful efficienov —the last things out in cigarettes, fancy pipes, cases, together with three new brands of tobacco, never before imported into the colony. His stock is worthy of the inspection of every smoker in town. The following are the names of the pupil teachers on the staff of tne Waio Karaka School who have passed the annual examination held in March last:—Senior examination : Miss M. J. Mcllhone, Miss Anne Horgan, Mis Jessie Wliyte. Junior do.: Miss E. McNiece, Miss Jessie Paterson, Miss R. Wolff. Pupil teacher from olass 5, Miss E. Akers. YeStebday a loaded truck, while coming down one of the inclines on the Moanatairi tramway, broke away, and after turning several Bomersaults stopped, bottom up, half way down the section. Some slight damage was done to the line, a start at repairing which was speedily made. We hate no desire to make invidious distinctions, but simply state the fact that the loaf now being manufactured at the establishment of Mr R. T. Douglas (late Douglas and Co.), idof a very superior description. Biscuits of every variety, also cake &c, &c, of a really Al class. Thb ancient Egyptians did not use tobacco, and mark, the ancient Egyptians are all dead. Excelsior Cigarettes, just imported direct from W. S. Kimball and Co. Vanity Fair, Old Judge, and Richmond Gems Cigarettes, all superior to 3s Tea. Beßt brands of Tobacco. Smoking-Room unequalled in the Colony.— Lawless and Co., Tobacconists, &o.
