The South American War.
Callao -was blockaded on April 18 by six Chiliwtfwarships, and the place afterwards bombarded ineffectually. The Peruvians had disembarked a cargo of arms at Chera, near Moliendo, and captured the Chilian steam launch Durende, at Tocopollo. Further advices from this source say the transport Oroya had just returned to Callao after repeat ing the exploits of La Union. She 'ran past the Chilian fleet in tha night, visited Tocopolla, destroyed some launches, and captured a small steamer. At one time she iras fighting the enemy from one side and discharging munitions of war at the same time from the other. It is considered a very brilliant affair. Colonel Albarracin had captured 300 Chilian cavalry at Locambra. The" Chilians are gradually extending their lines to Tacna. »
Campero, the new Bolivian President, had arrived at Tacna, with 3000. men, making the allied army (Peruvian-Boli' vian) 21,000 strong.
The Peruvian Admiral, Montero, is anxious to escape from Tacna. Lama is threatened by the Chilians, and the inhabitants are fleeing in dismay. Great distress prevails.
