The Bench had, therefore, decided to close a number of those hotels which had not sufficient accommodation. In those cases the B.ench would refuse the applications until the 12th June. The usual mode adopted by the Court was to hear applications for fresh licenses first,' but there were no fresh applications' on the Thames. Then the objections to the renewal of licenses. James McMullin applied for a renewal of license to the Warwick Arms Hotel Pollen street. Mr Campbell objected, and Mr Brassey supported the application. Mr Brassey admitted that the objection had been made, but he denied that the objector was not a householder. Mr Campbell said: The license has been held Ivro years in the name of the present applicant, and I am going (o show that the holder does not lire in the house, that he does not conduct it, but that Mr Mcllhopo conducts the house, and lires there with his family. I shall also be able to prove that gambling was carried on in the house. Ido not think it right that '. Mr Mcllhone should hold a license con.-, \ sideling the fact of his assuming to be a Government official. The natives do not... think it was fair that Mr Mcllhone should hold the license. Unfortunately I cannot tell what evidence would be adduced or I would be more explicit. Mr Brassey said they were charged 1 with gambling. He should ask the Court to require the objector to state the days on which the gambling is alleged to have taken place. - - The Bench ruled that this objection could be upheld. Mr Campbell proved that he was a householder. • . •• John McMullin, being sworn, deposed that he had held a publican's license for. upwards of ten years.
