In the "House of Commons to-day Sir Henry Drummond Wolff introduced a motion in favor of a refusal being given to Bradlaugh's claim for exemption from taking the oath. The House negatived the motion, but allowed an amended proposal to be referred to a select com* mittee.

The Fall Mall Gazette comments strongly on New Zealand financial affairs, contrasting the excessive debt of that colony per head with the other Australian colonies.

Lord Northbrook has sanctioned the temporary charge by Captain Pasley of the Agent-Generalship of Victoria. The Times, in reviewing political affairs in Victoria and New South Wales, considers, in regard to.the conflict between the two branches of the Legislature in the latter colony, that t^he Council is entirely in the right. Nevertheless, it thinks that the period of Australian nominee Councils is verging on a close, though two Chambers are essential. - It considers that it is natural that members of the Legislative Council should possess a property qualification, but that is no reason why they should be regarded as antagonistic to the people. The squatters had done much for the colonies, though some were, perhaps, grasping. The Victorian Council, the Times says, was the champion of equity, when opposing Mr Berry's confiscation policy. A telegram from' Teheran states that Ayub Khan, with 14,000 Cabuleae and other troops has left Herat for L.andahar.

By the new elections for Sandwich and Wigtown the Tories have replaced the Liberals. _____ .
