NEW WHAU.

The mine manager's report for the week states:—-" During the past ireek breaking down the reef in the 160 feet level .has been continued. The reef:has been broken down up to the face of the drive without any fold being seen; but to-day there is a great improvement in the appearance of it in the face of the drive. A trial crushing has been sent to the battery out of the reef broken down in this level, which is not yet finished. The level has been all timbered up, and two passes put in. Breaking down in No.(, 1 winze' will take place tomorrow. There is a large quantify of reef already stripped in this winze showing gold. As soon as this reef is broken down permanent stoping will be commenced. The 160 feet level has been continued westward in a good class of country, and! twenty or thirty feet more driving should cut the run of gold that crossed the winze thirty feet up from the level. This block is 150 feet in depth from the 160 feet level to the Whau level, as yet intact. The two hew passes in the Sons of Freedom were completed on Wednesday. The are each 150 feet in depth, with a hopper holding 15 tons at the bottom of each pass. Fifty feet of the top is very flat, and at this place iron shooting has been put in, which answers very well. The cost of those two passes for labor and material is £172. The oost of repairing 60-feet level, 140 feet in length, and laying down iron tramway, constructing two hoppers and driving 25 feet, is £72, making in all £244. Those passes give us a good permanent outlet for all mullock and quartz— F. Daykin.
