Both books are profusely illustrated, and would form valuable additions to the library of every household. •
Theee is now on view at Mr C. McLiver's shop, Brown street, a handsome shade of woolwork flowers, from the hands of the ladies of the Eoman Catholic Convent here. This handsome ornament, which will be disposed of on the art uuion principle, is well worthy of inspection.
At a meeting of volunteer officers held last night, Major Murray in the chair, it decided to not to hold a review here on the 24th inst. The Navals will fire tho customary royal salute with their large ordnance, but beyond that there will bo no demonstration. The companies will be inspected separately during the coming week.
It will be in the recollection of our readers that some considerable time ago, one of St. George's Naval Cadets named Eeddisb, was accidentally drownri while on Cadet Jjoat duty. He was a very steady lad and a smart young seaman. The boy's mother was anxious to be allowed to keep his carbine and waist-belt, and early in April, Major Murray applied to the Honorable the Defence Minister on her behalf, pointing out that the lad was drowned while On duty, that he had been a most efficient and excellent menrber of the corps, and while the carbine and belts were not worth much intrinsically to the Government they were priceless to the mother as mementoes of her deceased son. We lenrn that Ihe Defence Minister has to-day replied to Major Murray to the effect that Mrs Reddish is to be allowed to keep tha boy's carbine and belts. £> . A TKAIN, consisting of twenty-nine waagons, loaded with about 150 tons of stone went along the line from Hamilton to Te Awamutu on Tuesday as a test of the capabilities of both line and engines. One engine drew this heavy load from Mercer to Ohaupo; thence a secend engine was attached, and the train ran on to Te Awamutu. Some of. the gradients proved too much for the engines, and the load had to'be divided. The test on the whole, was satisfactory. *A through train will run to Te Awamutu on Monday, the 24th May, for the races.
