The neighborhood of Ciudad-Keal must be as unpleasant a residence just now as Salonica, if any trust can be placed in the story told by the Madrid newspapers. According to these, a band of men armed with knives and guns invaded Fuente del Fresno, a village containing 800 inhabi- ' tants, and made their way to the residence of the Aicade, whom they took prisoner. They compelled him to lead them to the houses of the principal inhabitants, who opened their doors without suspicion on hearing the voice of their municipal chief. The houses were then ransacked by the brigands, who, not content with plundering them, maltreated the residents. They ran pins into the feot and handß of one man who refused to say where his money was, and then beat him so severely that he was left for dead. Having secured all the booty they could lay hands on, they took the Aleade back to his house and gave Sim a good beating, and then departed as .they came, without meetiDg with any resistance. The leader of the band is a robber well known by the sobriquet of Caatioles; but though his wife has been arrested, he and has companions are still at liberty.
