TURBINES.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sie,—Your contemporary has eyidently a desire to be great on turbines, the merits and demerits of the several turbines on the field he has frequently treated his readers to a description of. While dis* coursing in h?s issue of-the 17th inst. on the new turbine for the Queen of Beanty mine, he implies credit for the fact, and inform* his readers that "The, water, instead of running into the buckets on the outside of the wheel, will do so from the inside, a principle the rery rererse of that adopted in the construction of the smaller turbines used on the field." Now, it is a well known fact that there are several turbines on ..the field which take their water from the inside of the wheel. In his issue of April 29,1880, while remarking upon the scarcity of water in the race he states that " This state of things has been brought about partly by the long continued drought, and last, but not least, by the defective kind of turbines used on the field, many of which are at present using twice as much water as they shor d." Now I would ask your contain* pora>.y to which class of turbines does he allude, the class that takes taeir water from the inside, or the outside? The Queen of Beauty Coy must ba correct, for they hare one of each, at the same time they hare the largest and the smallest, irrespective of power. Whether this is arrived at by theory or practice I cannot say. Perhaps your contemporary will kindly inform us. One thing I can say, I am of opinion that your .contemporary is not suffioientl - acquainted with the turbines on the fiela to give a correct opinion on the subject. This he has shown by implying that the new turbine for the Queen of Beauty is the first on the field that gets its water from the.inside; secondly, if he knows there are' tarbines using double the quantity they shottld do, he ought to say straight, whether they are County Councillors o; 1 other men.—l am, &e., . , Aquj%
