COUNTY FINANCE.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—Your spirited leading article in Saturday's issue has caused much oomment from ratepayers respecting the management (or rather mismanagement) of the Thames Connty financial matters, as lo where results for tha County expenditure of over ninety thousand pounds are to be seen. It is to be hoped the Com* mission appointed has the power to deal with and enquire into the loose way large sums are so utterly wasted from year to year—absolutely frittered away without leaving the ratepayers much better off as to permanent roads, &c." ; For the Thames district the carrying | out the County Act has proved a wretched 1 abortion—devoid of the good roads and other works promised by its supporters when first initated in 1876, and ever 1 since on every possible occasion lauded and inflated as the perfection of local government, but now cried down by nearly all who are not either employees or otherwise connected with the. Thames County Council. The County employees appear to be not over-well paid, most of them having to find other employment to add to their incomes; the error lies in there being too many of them. Trusting the important matter you have ventilated will produce good effect in future, I am, etc, Alex. Huxi. Grahamslown, 17th May, 1880.
