THE HAUPAKI CLUB.

(To the Editor of the Ev£NiH<J Stab.)

Sir,—As one of the promoters of the proposed Hauraki Club, alluded to in your yesterday's issue, allow me briefly to explain the reasons why we have bean unable—up-to Che present time —to carry out the scheme. Relying on the promised patronage and subscriptions of several influential citizens, we leased the premises known as the Hauraki Club for a term, and have incurred an expense, in patting them in repair and fitting them for the purpose, of some £50. The major part of the promised donations and subscriptions have not yet been handed over, although urgently applied for. We appropriated the entire proceeds of the concert—about £13—together with what cash subscriptions we had in hand to pay off our liabilities, as far as the money would. go, but we sail owe £21, and we do not feel justified in raining farther into debt, without some more substantial support than wo have been able to get. The conversion of the Mechanics' Institute into a Free Library have greatly in terfered with our chances of success, but there is still room for such an institution, and if those interested in the establishment of a comfortable winter resort will come forward aad promise

their subscriptions to Mr K. Honiss, boa. secretary, to au amount sufficient 10 cover our liabilities*, we will at once procure what further appliances are needful, and open the club for the winter season.—-I am, &c,

Geo. Newell Phillips. Seale'y street. May 14th.
