RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THIS DAT.

(Before E. F. Tizard and Major Murray, Esqs., J.P.'s.) DRUNKENNESS.

Two persons were punished for this offence.

MAY V. WALTEBB.

In this case Mr Brassey appeared for the plaintiff, who claimed balance of au 1.0. U. given him by defendant. The Magistrates wished to know how it was that the case was adjourned until to-day, and not until the ordinary Court day. Unless there was some very good reason for hearing the case they would not hear it.

Mr Brassey: Then in that case I shall ask the Court to adjourn until three o'clock, and in the meantime I shall summon two other Justices to hear the case.

The Clerk of the Court said he should put in his protest against such a proceeding as hinted at by Mr Brassey, as being an unusual course. Either the magistrates would hear the case or adjourn it it until next Court day. > After some consideration, the Bench decided to hear the case.

Hichard \May, being swora, deposed that the defendant gave an 1.0. U. for £8 in August, 1876, and since then he had only repaid £4 sa. The remainder of the money had not been paid. £5 of the amount was for a watch, £2 was for money lent, and £1 for interest. The Bench gave judgment for £3 15s, and costs £110s costs.

This concluded the business.
