A Lively Municipal Squabble.
A very lively meeting of the South Dunedin Council was held on Wednesday evening, for the purpose of revising the burgess roll. The room was crowded, I and as many of the auditors were chewing or smoking all the time, it was uncomfortably hot, and disgustingly dirty. The Mayor (Mr . Mahoney) having several weeks ago signed the burgess list, under the impression that it was the assessment lists, detached his name from the roll. The Council were about to revise this action, and a vote of censure on" the Mayor was pro* posed. The Mayor refused to put this, and the councillors carried a resolution appointing one of their number, to preside, and placed him opposite the Mayor, who declined to leave the chair. The motion of censure was carried. Mr Carey, the only supporter of the Mayor! advised His Worship to remain, and not to be frightened at" The ugly mug of the ugly chairman." - Such^ompliments were ' rapidly exchanged. One councillor told another he was dying by inches, and the other retorted by saying he would live for fifty years. The burgesses present talked almost as much and as abusively as the councillors. One called a councillor a " crotchety crawler." Bad language was indulged in by others, while some asserted the meeting was better and cheaper than a play. The councillors called each other "imbeciles," and freely exchanged remarks and compliments with the ratepayers present. At 11,55 p.m. the proceedings terminated, the Mayor declining to sign. the roil, although the councillors told him he was bound to obey them, and some ratepayers suggested that the councillors should take the Mayor by the neck and make him sign it. The Mayor's objection to signing was on the ground that the roll was not properly revised, the list of defaulters being made up to'3lst March instead of, as prescribed by the Act, to 31st December last.—Herald
It takes a whole legislature to change a man's name. A woman can change hers by the act of a single man.
