Oub contemporary the Herald is re* newing its youth. It commences a high* falutin leader on Mr Ball an cc in the following lively strain:—" What a gay young thing that Mr Ballance is ? He skips about in the political arena like some terpsicliorean celebrity all ability and muslin. He pirouettes, he stands on one toe —if he is not altogether fascinating, he ought to be." It requires a very elastic imagination to present a mental picture of the stately Ballance " busting" round a stage in the brief garments of a ballet girl.
Pabents intending to send their children to the High School are notified by advertisement that the half-quarter commences on Thursday, the 20th inst.
Anotheb meeting of gentlemen inferested iv furthering local industries is to be held on Monday afc the Borough Council Chambers. As it is of the utmost impor-' tance that all information possible should be at the disposal of the joint committee in order that proper representations may be made to the Royal C"mmission, we trust that all persons interested in the* promoting and fostering of industries which are of such vital importance to our country, will make a point of being present.
In our report of yesterday's Court, a mistake occurred which we hasten to correct. The item Hansen v. Hennelly should not have appeared, there being no case answering the description brought before the Court.
The Bay of Plenty Times has the following :—"A number of influential citizens met at Ellis' Hotel .yesterday afternoon for the purpose of congratulating Mr J. C. Young on his success in so completely clearing himself of the accusations made against him by the Government. After the address, Mr Young left for Auckland, and a number of his friends and fellow-townsmen proceeded with him to the s.s. Glenelg to wish him farewell."
Minebs at Big Bay, near Hokitika, are earning 35s per week. One of them writes to a Hokitika friend :—" We can live for about 7s or 8s a-week. It is a wonder that some' of the unemployed do not come down here in place of hanging about town. 'Jhey might put in the winter very comfortably. A miner, working on his own account at Okarito Fork, is reported to have extracted gold to the value of £256 within a week. He sold the gold to a bank in Ross, and has returned to his work. The recent rush to the Fork is not so well reported of. The ground is very patchy, and only one or two claims are as'yet payable."
There was no business at the R.M Court to-day.
