Smuggling.
At the Police Court to-day Sarah Bostoek was charged with evading the Custom's duties on a quantity of jewellery brought by t\\g ship Ben Nevis. The goods consisted of twenty gold watches, lockets, rings, pins, brooches, tea services, buttons, two cases of jewellery, shoes, and clothing. Mr Brookfield, Crown Prosecutor, prosecuted. Latbe.
Sarah Bostock, for smuggling jewellery, was fined £100 and costs, with the alternative of six months imprisonment.—Mr Brookfield withdrew the second charge. —The Bench hoped that the personal effects would be returned.—Mr Brookfield replied that everything would be forfeited. No doubt the clothing and necessaries would be returned. Richard Ash, a milkman, was fined for selling milk adulterated with water. Mr Reader Wood addresses his. constituents to night. Fairclough and Clara Stephenson are coming to Auckland. - , ' The Auckland Shipwright's Association adopted the rules and appointed an Executive Committee to protect the interests of the shipping trade, and communicate with the Government respecting their grievances. One grievance ig the payment for overtime after the customary hours for work, done on ships from outside the colony. Attempted Outrage and Murder "by a Frenchman. Smith, a Frenchman, who attempted to shoot a woman named Washer and her husband, at Whangarei, has been arrested. - Further telegrams show that Smith had made improper proposals to Washer'B wife which she rejected. < The. cause was his illicit love for the woman. Attempted Suicide. Mrs Ward, a resident of Chapel streat, attempted to commit suicide by jumping down a well. She was, however, rescued. The woman is deranged.
The boys concerned in stealing the biscuits from the case on the wharf were discharged, except two,-who were sentenced to forty-eight hours imprisonment .and a whipping.
