"GUTTER BOY" ON SOCIETY.

To the Editor of the Evbking- Stab. Sib, —I read a letter in your valuable journal of Saturday si^ued " Gutter Boy," on Society, and also another by "U. Colon," in this morning's papt-r, making a few remarks on your correspondent's effusion. On reading your correspondent's letter, I was immediately struck with the clear metallic ring of truth that pervades every sentiment therein expressed, and I cannot help thinking that the puerile criticism of " H. Colon " is from the pen of"one hard hit by "Gutter Boy.". What thinking man can deny that society is and always has been a sham and a delusion. As long as a man is respectable in the ordinary acceptation of the term, can he not steal on a large scale, sharp at cards, and break every mandate in the decalogue, and society looks on and says " clever fellow." Some notable instances of this have occurred at our very doors of late, showing that society, with all our vaunted Christian virtues, is as false and rotten as ever it was. " Gutter Boy's " remarks on the gentlemen of the long coat and gffhite choker, are simple verities, and no qoibbler as "H. Colon " shows himself to be, can prove otherwise ;-indeed, yonr correspondent's remarks about the wine bibbing companions of the embryo clergyman is a notorious scandal! "H. Colon" seeks to draw an erroneous inference from this statement--" The clergymen in secret must be wine bibbers." I would not draw that conclusion, but would say. that the loose companions of their early life cannot have a healthy effect on the morals of young clergymen.—l am, &c, ' Mudlabk.
