The Bursting of the Manawatu's Boiler.
The official inquiry into the circumstances connected with the recent accident to the boiler of the steamer Manawatu was held on Thursday. Several witnesses were examined, and the evidence went to show great negligence in not attending to the boiler. The cause of the accident is attributable to salt being in the boiler. John Symon, the only certificated engineer on board, gave evidence that he only went for one trip in the steamer, as she. could not clear the Customs without having a, certificated engineer on board. He denied being in. charge of the engines. He received, remuneration, and was not on the articles. A Mr Seagar was in charge of the engineroom during the trip to Wanganui. Witness was certain that if the water was tested in the bailer according to rule, an * accident would not have happened.- Mr Seagar was a non-certificated engineer. After a few minutes' discussion, tha Bench intimated that they would give judgment to-morrow afternoon.
