Mr Farrar, Q. 0., has been appointed Solicitor-General in the New Ministry. London, April 28. The Hon. John Pope Hennessy, C.M.G., Governor of Hong Kong has been created a Knight of the Order of St Michael and St. George. The Eight Hon. H. B. W. Brand, the present Speaker, is to be raised to the Peerage. ■ •- Major George Cumiog Strahau, E.A., C.M.G., Governor of the Windward Islands, has been appointed Governor of Tasmania. Inquiries in well>formed quarters show that there is no foundation for the report that the Prince of Wales is about to tisit Australia. April 29. The recent attack by Gladstone on Austria continues to excite anger at Vienna. Gladstone's explanation, published in a Vienna journal, states that he speaks only of individuals. Parliament has re-assembled after the Ministerial crisis, and members have been sworn in. The Eight Hon. H. B. Brand has been elected speaker. ' The irritation existing between Eussia and France in consequence of the refusal of the latter to extradite Hartmann has cooled down. M. Chanzy remains in St. Petersburg. Count Orloff has returned to Paris. It is reported that the massacre of British troops by hostile Pathans between Quettah and Candahar is denied. At the wool sales to-day 11,600 bales were offered, making a total of 93,200 bales catalogued since the opening. The tone of the market is quieter, but steady. , The Homeward English mails via Brindisi were delivered in London "today. . - .
