Lord Carlingford, formerly Mr Chichester Fortescue, has been appointed British Ambassador at Constantinople. London, April 29. THE ENGLISH CABINET. The Right Hon. J. G. Podson, has been appointed President of Local Government Board, with a seat in the Cabinet. Mr Anthony Munddla has been appointed Vice-president of Council on Education., Sir Henry James has been appointed Attorney-General. Henry Fawcett has accepted office as Postmaster-General. April 28. The Right Hon. John Bright has been appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, an office which he held in the last Gladstone administration.
The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Orient Steamship Company was held to-day, when a dividend of 5 per cent, was declared in addition to 6 per cent, carried to the reserve fund. The Chairman made a speech, in which he stated that all the company's steamers would shortly be fitted with cold air machinery for carrying meat on freight for all-comers, like ordinary cargo. He also stated that it was intended to increase the capital of the company to one million.
At the wool sales to-day 113,000 bales were offered, making a total of 815,000 bales catalogued since the opening. Bather weaker demand for cross breds; common to medium qualities, -}d to Id lower. ', , ' London, April 27. Three per cent consols, 99f; Adelaide wheat, per 4961 bs (ex warehouse), 535; 5 per cent New Zealand 10.4 loan, 104; new 5 per cent-jlfem one pound lower. At-the wool sales today, 8,700 bales were catalogued, making a total 'of 70,200 since the opening. Prices were firmly maintained.
