KARAKA CREEK.

Mining in this locality, once the principal centre of the industry, has sunk to a low ebb of late, and though several parties are working away pluckily the returns are very moderate. The praiseworthy exertions of the County Council to provide good roads to the mines are being crowned with success, and so with cheap carting and Crushing, much smaller yields will remunerate the Karaka Creek miner. During the late very dry weather the creek has been low, and were it not for the overflow from the water-race the batteries would have to stand idle. Both Bull's and Vickery's batteries are working just now, the former being such a favorite with the tributes and small claim holders that they briujj their stuff from all parts of the district. The tramway is in exceedingly bad repair and the trucks used by thc^ railway contractors are in constant jeopardy. Several claims are in operation on tho Una' Hill, notably the Joker and Major. The proprietors of these mines having met with fair encouragement, have spout a great deal of money on tho construction of works, and in prospecting the ground. The shareholder* of tho former have recently intersected the reef at a lower level, and hope shortly to bo obtaining j payable returns.
