THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, APRIL 26, 1880.

The news concerning the aspect of affairs on the Waimate Plains has been scanty of late. From a telegram in another column it will be seen that the natives offer no opposition to the works now in course of formation on the Plains. This is at all events reassuring, as showing a friendly spirit that is felt towards us by the followers of the Maori Elijah. Whether this friendliness is real or only apparent, it is difficult to say, but the absence of suoh a large military force, would no doubt cause a change in the native temper towards the surveyors. We cannot long continue to support this little standing army of ours on the Plains, and some definite measure will hare to be adopted to stop the nonsensical prophetical gibberish that now and again bursts like a flood from the lips ofTe Whiti. It is amusing to watch the interest taken in this ragged, unkempt savage! There is not more anxiety felt in waiting the answer from a sinister and wily diplomatist, like Prince Bismarck, holding the peace of Empires in his hand, than in expecting the replies of this old Parihaka bogey. As we said before, the colony cannot long afford to maintain a small standing army for the amusement of a playful* old scarecrow and idiot like the Parihaka dodger.
