We have received the latest number of the Illustrated New Zealand Herald, published in Dunedin. It contains a large number of views of Australian subjects and one of the North East "Valley, Dunedin. They are all capitally got up, and if New Zealand came in for a fairer share of the artists' skill we should have nothing but praise for the publication.

The vital statistics for the month of March last shew that the Thames has the salutary reputation of shewing the lowest per centage of deaths to 1000 of population namely, .69, the Napier ranking next with .90. Timaru was next with 1.20, Dunedin 1.21, and Auckland 1.33. The highest death rate was in Caversham, where the per centage of deaths to every 1000 of the population was 3.17; next Wanganui 2.40; Wellington, 2.32; and Hokitika, 225. Caversham is built ou a marsh, and is illdrained leading to the prevalence of zymotic diseases such as typhoid fever. Wanganui is also flat and badly drained, and Wellington and Hokitika are in the same condition. On the whole the death rate has been lowest in the higher latitudes of the colony. '
