NAPIER.
This day.
Fire. The Commercial Hotel at Spit was destroyed by tiro at 2 a.m. this morning. Mr Gollop,* the proprietor was absent, beiug at a private party in town. His wife and one servant were alone in the House and were sleeping together. They were roused by the unwonted sounds, and discovered the house to be on fire, which then had such a hold, that they could only save a box or two of clothing. Both the Spit and Napier Fire Brigades had been holding their annual dinner in town, but in spite of having " dined," turned out promptly and succeeded in confining the fire to the hotel, though the adjoining buildings were severely scorched. The weatherboards of Banner and Liddle's bonded store were burnt through in places. Insurances on the building: £600 in the South British; £400 in the Victoria. The stock and furniture were insured for £600 in the Hanseatic. At the fire brigade dinner last night, Mr Sutton, M.H.E., presiding, MiMiller, chief gaoler, and late Superintendent of the brigade, was presented with a testimonial and handsome silver tea and coffee service.
