We think that action should at once be taken by Ohinemuri residents to prevent a spread of the cattle epidemic into their district, Pleuro-pneumonia is novy prevalent in the Waibato, and great danger threatens the herds of the Upper Thames unless there is some supervision exerciisrd over the introduction of cattle from infected districts. We believe that a islegram has been forwarded to the Cattle Board in Auckland onjthe matter.
A meeting of shareholders in the Few Golden Crown Company is called for to-morrow evening at the Governor Boweh Hotel for the purpose of forming a Company. J Membees .of the Liberal Association are reminded of their adjourned meeting which takes place this evening. The last week's number of Punch contains a fairly executed cartoon of our respected Warden and Magistrate, H. Kenrick, Esq. Another sketch represents the Hon. Mr Oliver dining, the dishes served to him allegorically representing the various proposed railways of the North. The sketches of character in Queen street are very well done, several 'well-known Auckland citizens being admirably pourtrayed. " .
We were yesterday shown by Mr Plant, the local amateur potter, who was so- successful at the Sydney Exhibition, some beautiful specimens of the potter's art, and much more artistic than those that took the Exhibition gold medal. One of these is a small jug, well modelled, and bearing bas-relief busts of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Another is a large vegetable dish faultlessly moulded, and manufactured in a manner that would do credit to a first class tradesmen. We think that*Mr Plant has thoroughly proved the adaptability of the Thames clays for the manufacture of pottery, and hope to see shortly this branch of the industrial art become a staple local industry.
We are glad to learn that the last meeting of the Board of Education, Mr A. S. Colhoun was appointed head teacher of the Waiotahi Creek School.
Me McLiteb's new smoking and reading room is now open to the public. It is neatly fitted up, and will tyj a pleasant and popular place of resort during the winter months. The proprietor deserves credit for. the enterprise he has displayed. Thbbe was no business at the K.M. Court this morning. A IAB&E crowd gathered in Albert street, Auckland, yesterday afternoon, attracted by the strange conduct of a man who, as one of the juveniles remarked, appeared to be "hoff his honion." He quietly approached the pump in front of Messrs Branston and Fbster's, and • began to lecture the crowd, Then, taking out a pocket- handkerchief, he inform,e<f his audience that, after he had wet it he would show them a magic lantern. The, boys pouldn't see it, and began to laugh at him, whereupon the lecturer took off his hat, and thyew water over those nearest to him. His nost proceeding was an attempt to drink the reservoir dry by using up the supply in the pump, and it was some time before., he found that he 1 had very diflßcult task. Afterwards, to the great amusement of; the boys, he attempted to get into fchs horse-trough. This he could not manage altogether, so, ,' disgusted with his audience, he left them and proceeded towards the wharf, where ho was soon followed by a member of ' the police force, who duly attended to his wants. :■. ;■'.; ;'.' .■■,.'■ . ■■■' ■■• ' . .;■. ■
The annual meeting of subscribers to the Thames Hospital will be held this evening at the/Academy of Music fov the purpose of electing a President, VicePresident, Hon Treasurer and Committee. Subscribers-of 6s during past year are entitled to vote: • We would remind our readers of the anniversary soiree and concert of the ■ Ancient Order of Fores!ers to be held at the Academy of Music on Friday nex-b. The Mayor will preside at the concert, which will be followed by a dance. j There are many truths which are selfevident, and upon which our feet cannot be tod firmly planted. But, while there are points which we may not yielft, it is always* well to remember that there are two sides to every question. Dit Kilgour, Coroner, held an inquivy into the circumstances attending the late fire in Mackay street. Mr Thomas Kitching was chosen foreman of the jury, and two witnesses were examined, viz., Mrs Bryan and Mr Schaeffer. No light, however, wa9 thrown on the origin of the fire, and the jury returned a verdict to that effect, adding that they believed it to be the work of au incendiary.
