Fire in Mackay Street
At an early hour this morning a fire broke out in a small cottage in Mackay street, Shortland, owned by Mrs O'Bryan. The flames were observed almost simultaneously by the watchman of the Shortland* Sawmill and Constable Haslett and Mr Trainer, who went to ring the Karaka bridge bell. The Grahams* town bell was rung by Mr W. Finlay, Cartwright the night-watchman being unable to ring it through a defect in the apparatus. At the time of the fire the cottage was not occupied. Mr SchaeftMjL who resides next door, was aroused by the noise of the flames bursting through the roof, and speedily commenced removing the furniture. By the time the Shortland Brigade . arrived all hope of saving the cottage was gone, and with the assistance of the Grahamstown contingent, they succeeded in confining the flames to the one building though Sehaefter's cottage is' only a few distant. A well directed stream of water was kept on the flames, which were speedily subdued. Great credit is due to the! Brigades for their promptitude. The house was insured in the National Corn* panyfor£so.
