THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 1880.

The result of Hughes' case has been considerably commented on, both by professional and non-professional men. i Whether the verdict of "Not guilty" was justified or sanctioned by the evidence we pretend not to say. It j appears, however, that prior to the trial I before Mr Justice Richmond, an intertested party, who lent his aid to the defendant in the case, went round, interviewed the jury, and at the same time I endeavored to biaa the minds of the jurymen by promise of reward. The jury, however, had a higher order of principle than they were credited with, and indignantly repudiated the idea. The thought that the Supreme Court, the highest temporal judicature, and the jury are open 'to such corruption, is a regrettable one. If juries can be tampered with and their minds biassed by receiving guerdon, then there is an end to justice, [and the man of affluence and influence Nwill be able to obtain the verdict in his favour. If the individual who endeavored to tamper with the minds of the jury in the said case could be exposed, an example ought to be made of him, and his action stigmatised as despicable, mean, and utterly contemptible. Our evening contemporary at Auckland has taken the matter up warmly, and we shall expect to hear some remarks on the subject from Mr Justice Richmond.
