Cooktown, Monday.
The Eastern and Australian mail steamer Bowen has arrived from Singapore with the Torres Strait mails. She brings news that the French Admiral has been instructad to occupy Tonquin, in Cochin China, and he will levy a duty of two per cent on imports, and one per cent on exports, and 20 per cent per ton on vessels leaving for Manilla.

The F. and 0. Company's steamship Hydaspeshas arrived in King George's Sound on Tuesday from Ceylon with the inward Suez mails. Passenger for Dunedin—Mr Scott. -
Wreck of ft P, and 0. Steamer.
The Hydaspes brings news that the F. and O. steamer Cavancour had run ashore at Otranto on the Italian coast a few miles south of Brindisi. She was expected to become a total loss.
