This day, Heavy Sentence for Rape.
Judge Richmond sentenced the Fijian Joe, convicted for rape on a little girl at Parnell, to tan years penal servitude, with two whippings.
Tidmarsh, for attempting a rape on a married woman at Parnell, was sentenced to six years and two whippings. The youth Breen, for attempted rape at Onehunga, was > sentenced to three months, with two whippings.
The Eotorua has arrived at Eussell from Sydney. She left there eight passengers. For Wellington—Cooper. For other ports 23 in steerage. She brought 81 tons of cargo. .
The Hon. Mr Oliver, Minister for Public Works, replying to a deputation, said that the subject of the construction of new lines had been left to the Railway Commission. The balance of the five million loan was insufficient to complete the railways already commenced.
