THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 1880.

His Worship the Mayor cannot but feel flattered at the attendance at hit meeting last night, the unanimous manner in which his explanations were received, and the resolution desiring him not to resign his office was carried. Of coarse it is to be regretted that the occasion ever arose for calling such a meeting, but the result was at least satisfactory So His Worship. Cr Bawden, in defending hi» action, gave but a very poor excuse for the course followed by him, and he also stated that he had the permission of the other offending Councillors, except Cr Wilkinson, whom he had not seen, to offer the same excuse for them. It appears very strange that these gentlemen were not present to answer for themselves, when they had gone so far as to give a fellow-Councillor authority to speak for them. If, as stated, the only reason they had for voting against a resolution (which in effect was only accepting the explanation offered by the Mayor as satisfactory), was that it was unnecessary, it may with truth be said that an unnecessary way of making that assertion was taken. Other Councillors, if not Cr Bawden, should be able to give a better excuse for their course of action.
