The following gentlemen have been appointed a Eoyal Commission for the Melbourne Exhibition, His Excellency the Governor, Dr Hector, Messrs Dransfield, Hutchison, Lemon, Levin, Mclntyre, Krull, Thompson, and Tolhurst.
A TEiiBGrBAH says that Messrs Beasley and Cook, the delegates appointed by the Canterbury Working Men's Association to inspect the lands open for selection in the North Island under deferred payment left yesterday in the s.s. Taiaroa for New Plymouth. They will afterwards visit Auckland. The Government provide passages.
Dubing the meeting of the Borough Council last night, there was a large attendance of ratepayers, who appeared to take great interest in the warm debates towards the close. After the Mayor's abrupt resignation, the excitement was intense, and opinions seemed about equally divided on the questions at issue.
Ma Bbodik, County Chairman, ever watchful over the interests of the district, has gone to Auckland to interview the Hon. the Minister for Public Works. It ia to be hoped that the disagreement in the Borough Council wilt not interfere with the wants of the municipality and the diitrict being laid before the Minister by the Mayor personally.
The Ohinemuri affiliation case, Muldoon v. McGeehan v has been settled out of Court by an amicable arrangement between the parties. We understand that another case of a similar nature will be brought before the R.M. for settlement.
The Naval Cadets are notified that the annual meeting takes place this evening, members being requested to appear in uniform.
A cricket match has been arranged to be played to-morrow afternoon at Parawai at 2 p.m. sharp between the married and single of the T.C.C. As the season will soon terminate, a goodly muster is requested; the married team will com* prise'the following :—Steadman, Lawless, Gray, Young, Lough, Munro, Hanby, Buttle, Otway, senr.,! Harrison, Hearn, Spencer, lenr.; the single team will be Spencer, junr., Turner, Burgess, Crump, Gellion, Gray, Hudson, McLean, Baxter, Botheram, Chilcott and Stewart.
In another column will be found an advertisement from Mr W. McDowell, so well known on the Thames a« the proprietor of the Empire hotel, Owen street, stating that he has taken the Thames hotel restaurant in Auckland, and asks for the patronage of his old friends.
Dubing last season Archer, the great English jockey, won 191 races. In 7 years he has won no fewer than 1270 events.
